We’re very much looking forward to seeing you all on Monday! Here’s everything you need to know about the event.

This is sort of a long one. We’ll cover:

  1. The Schedule
  2. How to get to the Venue
  3. Registration
  4. Eating and Drinking
  5. WIFI
  6. Accessibility
  7. Useful Information for Austria
  8. Code of Conduct
  9. Contact Information

1. The Schedule

The event will start at 08:30 on Monday, 25. November. That’s when the venue opens, then there’s time for you to go to registration and get settled in until the opening remarks at 09:30.

Talks will be around 40 minutes each, with short breaks in between. Lunch break is from 13:00-15:00. There will be a surprise performance after that, so make sure you’re back in time ;)

There’s eight regular speakers plus a mysterious 9th speaker (most of you probably know them though), to complete the lineup. The event will end at around 19:30.

The full schedule will be on the homepage at the day of the conference.

Aftershow Party!
There will be a fantastic aftershow party happening at 20:00, next door at Badeschiff Wien. There will be funk, hiphop and house music by a few great DJs, as well as an opportunity to try curling for the first time in your life. It should be a ton of fun - so make sure you don’t miss it!

2. How to get to the Venue

The venue address is:

Urania Sternwarte
Uraniastraße 1,
1010 Wien
(show on map)

The entrance is at the back of the building and is marked “Mittlerer Saal”. Here’s how it looks:

By Public Transport

The easiest way to get to the venue is to use the metro (“U-Bahn” U1 or U4) and go to the station “Schwedenplatz”. Look for the exit marked “Urania” and take the stairs upward, or take the elevator from the station center to ground level. From there it’s a 3-minute walk straight to the venue.

You have to get a ticket for public transport before entering a train. You can get tickets at the red machines found at most metro station entrances. A single ride is 2,40€, a 24hour pass is 8€ and includes all public transport (metro, tramway, buses) in Vienna.

There’s an app called Quando for local public transport, or you can use the website of Wiener Linien to get detailed instructions on how to get around.

By Taxi / Uber / etc

If you go by taxi, it’s usually enough to tell the driver to go to Urania (pronounced “Oore-uhn-ia” in German). Depending on where you start from, a taxi will cost around 8€ to 16€.

From the Train Station

Most trains arrive at Vienna’s new central train station “Wien Hauptbahnhof”. Take the red line U1 in direction “Leopoldau” to the station “Schwedenplatz”, it’s just a 7-minute trip. From there, follow the instructions above to walk to the venue.

From the Airport

The nearest airport is Vienna Schwechat (VIE), located ~10km south of town. Local trains S7 or the CAT leave approximately every 15 minutes and run from the airport (“Flughafen Wien”) to the city center (“Wien Mitte”). Local trains S7 take a bit longer, but they’re much cheaper. From there it’s either a short metro ride to Schwedenplatz or a 700m walk to the venue.

3. Registration

There’s two options for registration where you can pick up your conference badge:

  1. at the warm up event on Sunday, 24. November, from 15:00-18:00 at “El Burro”
  2. directly at the venue on Monday 25. November, from 8:30-9:30

In either case, you don’t have to print your ticket or bring anything else, your name is enough. If you go to the warm-up event on Sunday, you don’t have to attend the meetup - you can just drop by anytime between 15:00 and 18:00 to get your badge.

4. Eating and Drinking

We’ll provide water, fruit juice, tea and coffee throughout the event. You will get a glass water bottle at registration, which you can use to get a refill whenever you want.
There will also be some snacks to keep you happy.

The main lunchbreak will be at Badeschiff Wien, a floating restaurant right next to the venue. We’ll have syrian and somali dishes fit for vegetarian and vegan diets.

There’s enough seats for about 100 people there, so it would be best to not have everyone rush over at once - instead we’re looking to spread it out a little. That’s why there will be lightning talks during the break. We’d like to encourage everyone who is interested to stay a little longer, listen, and then head over to lunch (don’t worry, there will be enough for all 😉).

5. WIFI

Urania is a beautiful old building, but they didn’t build it with WIFI in mind back in 1910. It’s very hard to get a good WIFI signal in there, and we’ll try our best to make it happen. But if we do, it probably won’t be able to handle 200 people at once.

However: 3G/4G coverage is pretty good at the venue, so we’d like to ask anyone with a working data plan (all EU providers are fine, there’s no roaming cost) to use their own connection, and leave the WIFI to attendees without one. Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for your help!

6. Accessibility

The venue is accessible by wheelchair via a separate entrance a few meters to the right of the main door. From there you can take an elevator to the conference hall level. An accessible toilet is available as well.

All talks will be in English and have live captions provided by a dedicated person in the room. These captions will be displayed as subtitles on the main screen.

7. Useful Information for Austria

For everyone coming to us from another country, we have a few helpful pointers for you:

  • You don’t need a travel visa if you’re a citizen of the EU. You can check the visa requirements for your country but in any case, a regular tourist visa is valid for up to 90 days.
  • The currency is Euro (€), you should be able to get cash at any ATM with your regular Maestro bank card.
  • Shops are closed on Sundays in Austria. Restaurants are usually open though.
  • If you want to explore the city a bit or are looking for a good place to eat/drink, we made this list of our favourite places in Vienna for you.

8. Code of Conduct

We want to make sure the conference is a safe, enjoyable environment for everybody. That’s why all attendees, speakers, sponsors and volunteers at the conference are required to agree to our code of conduct.

If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact a member of conference staff immediately.
